Preventing Plastic Mast Plugs From Failing Plastic mast plugs can fail by pushing up into the lower mast, causing the diamonds to go slack, which can lead to mast failure. Damage to the deck can also result. A simple way to stop this happening is shown below. A hole is drilled through the mast, plug, and vang fitting as shown, and a stainless bolt passes through the plug, locating it in the mast. This will prevent the plug from being driven up into the mast.
