Position statement from the Chief Measurer.
The voting for the current round of proposed rule changes is well underway and I hope that it will be completed in time to be published in each regions next newsletter, prior to the Internationals (It does not have the same ring to it as worlds does it?) in Melbourne. Recently I had the opportunity to join our UK friends at a regatta on a little reservoir near Oxford. When I say little I mean it! I lost track of the number of laps I had done, and just about lost sight of the Morgans transom! and was advised by another skipper just to keep going as the time limit was only 2 hours! It was a great weekend and I was very impressed by the hospitality of the Tasar fleet, they certainly enjoy their sailing, and a few beers afterwards. The beer is, by tradition, warm and went by the name "Dogs Bollocks". I believe it came courtesy of a Tasar sailor, I hope he is coming out here at Christmas so I can get my own back! Two recent questions e-mailed to me regarding class rules related to the use of carbon fibre whisker poles and electric/solar powered compasses. After discussing the whisker pole issue with colleagues around the world, and comparing the cost of a piece of tube, A$15 against over A$100 I have issued an interpretation stating that carbon fibre poles are not permitted. The subject of compasses is covered in the current class rules, we are allowed 2 and as long as they do not perform any function over and above that of a normal tactical compass I do not see any need to take any further action at this time. We will be holding a Measurers meeting at Sandringham, prior to the AGM. I would ask that all regions nominate someone if their measurer cannot attend. It is a very good opportunity to compare ideas for improving our class. Please fax or e-mail me with any items that you would like added to the agenda, I will send out a formal notice prior to Christmas to all regions. See you in Sandringham, Ian Guanaria Chief Measurer October 7, 1997 |
