The Tasar Mk II Concept

Look at the 29er, Tasar, and 59er at www.bethwaite.com

- Hull and deck out of existing Tasar moulds.
- New centrecase envelope, new thwart
- Alloy foils and cast rudder stock as 29er, 59er.
- Carbon 55mm dia lower mast as 59er 3.5lbs. Glass/carbon topmast 3.1lbs.
- Single spreader as 29er. (Tasar alloy mast17lbs app) Boom as 29er.
- Sails mylar as 29er, 49er. Mainsail very similar to 29er with cuff and ram vang. New jib to fit Tasar fore triangle.
- Fittings - Few, simple, light - as 29er, 59er. No furler, nor sliding jib tracks, nor sliding stays, nor traveller and car and blocks.
- No rotation handle etc.

Weights.
- 59er bonded, trimmed - 128lbs (16ft x 6.75ft) Carbon/glass/epoxy.
- Present Tasar bonded, trimmed, thwart fitted 125.4lbs (14.7ft x 5.7ft) glass/Polyester
- Concept Tasar MkII pro rata 100lbs; say 105 to 110lbs. Carbon/glass/epoxy
- Present Tasar total 140 rigged hull + 55lbs all else = 195lbs total.
- Concept Tasar MkII 115 rigged hull + 40lbs = 155lbs total.

Cost. This is surprising:
- Our present prices $A, no tax. Rounded ($A1 = $US 0.55, GBP 0.34 app.)
- 59er 17.5k
- Tasar 14k
- 29er 12k
- Notional 29er with no spinnaker nor spin equipment nor trapezes 10.2K
- Estimate Tasar MkII 12 - 12.5k (11.5 - 12 if demand justifies revision.)

Areas of savings:
Adoption of 29er/59er production techniques, alloy foils, few fittings, no wingmast rig.

Performance considerations:
- Weight factor: In 1970-’71 NS14’s crewed 250lbs sailed around the course 1% faster in 0 to 7kts, 10% faster in 8kts plus than identical boats crewed 300lbs. Nothing has changed.
- No wingmast factor MkII slightly slower except on run.
- Cuff factor MkII slightly faster except on the run.
- Area factor From 123 to say 130 sq ft on more flexible mast - faster.

Estimated performance of MkII concept around course compared with standard Tasar, given the plus and minus factors above:
- Light air, flat water Shade faster.
- Light air, waves Faster.
- Wind 8kts plus Much faster

Conclusion:
A concept such as this would become the world’s pinnacle “no trapeze, no spinnaker” boat for the next ten to twenty years.
