Tasar Tune-up Seminar

(reprinted from North American Tasar Association newsletter 39, Summer 1993)

Jay Renehan presented an excellent two-day seminar at Jericho on May 8 and 9, 1993.  Jay talked about how to sail better and faster with, of course, a lot of specific references to the Tasar.

Jay began by referring to the article “Higher and Faster” by Morgan Reeser in the April 1993 issue of Sailing World.  Almost everything in this article, which uses the 470 as the example boat, applies to the Tasar (for the one exception, see below).

The following table summarizes Reeser's main points:

Need to point higher?

Problem

Cure

1.Main leech too open

Increase sheet tension

Bring boom closer to centreline with traveller

Increase vang tension

2.Main too flat

Decrease mast bend

3.Lee helm/not enough weather helm

Increase mast rake (* - see below)

Lower centreboard

Move crew weight forward

4.Jib entry too round

Move Jib lead inboard

Decrease headstay sag

Decrease jib cloth tension

5.Jib leech too open

Increase jib sheet tension

Move jib lead forward

Decrease mast rake

Want to Go Faster?

Problem

Cure

1.Main leech too tight

Ease sheet slightly

Ease boom farther off centreline with traveler

Ease boom vang

2.Main too full

Increase mast bend

3.Too much weather helm

Reduce leeward heel, flatten boat

Reduce mast rake (* - see below)

Move crew weight aft

Raise centreboard slightly

4.Jib entry too fine

Move lead outboard

Increase headstay sag

Increase jib cloth tension

5.Jib leech too tight

Ease sheet

Move lead aft

Increase mast rake

* Increasing or decreasing mast rake will increase or decrease weather helm as Morgan Reeser states above.  However Jay says that on the Tasar the effect of changing rake on boatspeed and pointing is the opposite of that shown in the table.  Increasing rake will help boatspeed but hurt pointing.  Decreasing rake will improve pointing but hurt speed.  Since weather helm doesn’t seem to be a problem on the Tasar when the rake is varied within the allowable limits it might be best to ignore Morgan Reeser’s advice on this point.
