A
huge congratulations to Craig McPhee and Gill Berry on a
well-deserved championship win, and to Andrew Martin and Phillip
Potter for an outstanding regatta as runners-up. Well done also to
Chris Dance and Jarka Kluth on securing third place.
Congratulations to all skippers and crews in the 36-boat Tasar
fleet for being part of a fantastic national championship.
A
massive thank you to Wallaroo Sailing Club, the many volunteers,
sponsors, the Australian Tasar Council, and the Tasar Association
of South Australia for making this event such a success.
Heats 5 & 6
The
Tasar fleet of skippers, crews and race officials were on site
early, arriving around 8:00am to prepare for another big day of
racing. Boats hit the water by 9:30am in stiff conditions, with a
10:00am start greeted by a 15-20 knot land breeze and a short,
sharp chop.
A
triangle-loop course was set, delivering exhilarating broad reaches
and a fast downhill run.

It
was great to see the top-five placings shared across SA, WA, NSW
and VIC, highlighting the depth of competition in the fleet.
Post-racing, the Ronstan Half Hour provided the usual mix of
stories, Ronstan prizes, champagne and cheese.
Racing resumes tomorrow with the final heats of the series, with an
intended start time of 10:00am.
Heats 2, 3 & 4
Blue
skies and 30 degrees greeted the fleet in Wallaroo today for an
early morning session of racing. Crews made their way to the
sailing club from around 8am, launching into a light breeze of
about 5 knots as the fleet sailed out to the start line for an
intended 10am start.
As
the sea breeze began to fill, Heat 2 was contested in 8-13 knots. A
triangle-loop-triangle course was run, with first place taken by
Chas Thompson and Lorraine Thompson in 'Lodden Calling'. Second
went to Craig McPhee and Gill Berry in 'Roll Your Own', with Andrew
Martin and Phillip Potter rounding out the podium in 'Goes to
Eleven'.
The
breeze continued to build for Heat 3, raced in 13-18 knots, again
over a triangle-loop-triangle course. First place went to Craig
McPhee and Gill Berry in 'Roll Your Own', followed by Chris Dance
and Jarka Cluth sailing 'Magic' in second. Third place was claimed
by David Johnson and Steven Power in 'Knot Appropriate'.
By
Heat 4, the winds were well and truly piping in at 15-20 knots,
with a short chop and solid waves providing exciting reaches and a
fast run. The course was a triangle-loop with a short reach through
the finish line. Andrew Martin and Phillip Potter (VIC) took the
win, followed by Kane Binks and Louise Binks (WA) in 'Product of
Australia' in second, and Chris Dance and Jarka Cluth (VIC) in
'Magic' taking third.
A
fantastic day of sailing saw six different boats and crews step
onto the podium across the three heats.
The Ronstan Half Hour in the clubhouse was once
again hosted by Adrian Nicholson and Ian Taylor, with prizes
awarded and stories flowing freely. The afternoon was capped off by
Kane Binks, who championed his comedic world tour performance by
forming the 'Tasar Band', complete with an array of nautical
instruments and a chorus of salty singers performing the Beatles
classic "Yellow Submarine"

Tasar Nationals - Day 1 - 13th Jan
Heat
1 of the 51st Tasar National Championship delivered classic Tasar
conditions, with a south-westerly sea breeze ranging from 15-25
knots and plenty of action on the water.
Victorians Andrew Martin and Phillip Potter sailing
'Goes to Eleven' had a stellar day, claiming first place.
Second place went to invitation heat winners, South
Australians Craig McPhee and Gill Berry in 'Roll Your Own'.
Rounding out the podium were Wallaroo SC locals Kym
Flint and Karen Westlake, also from South Australia, sailing 'In
the Groove'.
It
is a cracking start to the regatta and fast Tasar racing at its
best.
The
day featured several capsizes and thrills and spills around the
course.
Post-race celebrations continued with the traditional Tasar
'sparkling white hour' in the clubrooms, where Adrian Nicholson and
Ian Taylor hosted the RONSTAN prize presentations.
Racing resumes tomorrow with a morning session and a 10:00am
start
